Announcing the Big CleanUP!
More and more debris, most notably plastic, is ending up in the ocean everyday. There have been many efforts to document this and deal with it. Now we’re reaching out to the next generation.
The Big CleanUP, is a summer-long challenge to engage middle and high school students in dealing with the growing issue of ocean debris, while raising money for school projects.
The contest starts with a webinar Thursday, June 7 at 1:00pm EDT, featuring Philippe Cousteau of EarthEcho, TerraCycle’s national recycling and tracking system for previously non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle waste, and incredible images from us, One World One Ocean.
Guest speakers will explore how plastic affects the oceans, how these issues relate to classroom learning, and how young people can take a leading role in protecting our oceans.
• Philippe Cousteau, Co-founder and President of EarthEcho International
• Barbara MacGillivray, Board of Directors of One World One Ocean
• Tom Szaky, Co-founder and CEO of TerraCycle
• Cathryn Berger Kaye, Education Consultant and Author
After the webinar, Big CleanUP participants can get started using EarthEcho’s CleanUP Action Guide and TerraCycle’s debris tracking system to log their progress and compete to see which groups prevented the most trash from entering the ocean.
Contest prizes include TerraCycle products, One World One Ocean film passes, and a school visit from Philippe Cousteau and Tom Szaky, as well as opportunities to win Flip cameras.
