OWOO at the Genesis Awards

By Meghan MacGillivray

This past weekend MacGillivray Freeman Films and One World One Ocean were invited by IMAX to The Genesis Awards, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Sponsored by The Humane Society, these awards are given to people in media who support animal rights and humane treatment of all living creatures.

The star-studded event had celebrities presenting awards, and others accepting them, in categories from Feature Film and Feature Documentary to TV News Magazine and Best Local News Feature. Comedic hosts Stephen Colbert and Ellen DeGeneres were honored with awards, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes won Best Feature Film.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey, whose Shark Bait won Best TV Documentary.

We were delighted to watch the trailer for One World One Ocean’s To The Arctic, as was the crowd of animal lovers, who were rapt by our delightful shots of polar bears. Another WB and IMAX film, Born to be Wild produced by Drew Fellman, was presented with Best Documentary, a well-deserved honor. We’re hopeful To The Arctic will take this award when it is entered next year.

Each format was honored for its contribution to raising public awareness of animal issues, which ranged from protecting wild horses to banning shark finning. The event was designed to raise funds and consciousness for The Humane Society.

Guests were treated to a delicious vegan dinner, plenty of cocktails, and an after-party complete with media lounge and photo booth, but for me, the highlight was Uggie (the talented dog from The Artist) who delightfully aided host Carrie Ann Inaba in presenting awards.
