Sylvia Earle Ocean Conservation Award Winners Announced!
The One World One Ocean Campaign has teamed up with MY HERO to create the Sylvia Earle Ocean Conservation Award. We asked members of the public to send in videos about their ocean heroes, and today we’re happy to announce the winner! This award was inspired by the lifelong work of oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle whose dedication to ocean conservation is second to none. Dr. Earle is an author, lecturer, explorer, leader and research scientists who has led over 70 expeditions, logging more than 6,500 hours underwater. She is truly One World One Ocean’s ocean hero.
Formed to celebrate ocean conservation through film, the award is presented by the One World One Ocean Campaign, created by MacGillivray Freeman. This award comes with a $500 cash prize and will be presented at this year’s MY HERO International Film Festival, in December.
We want to congratulate the filmmakers who won this award, Cheikh Seck and Khalil Ba, who found and documented their ocean hero, Karim Sall, otherwise known as “Mr. Whale.” Karim’s provides an inspiring example of an ocean hero through his work in Senegal working to protect his ocean and encourage others towards ocean conservation which was truly illustrated in the filmmaker’s video.
Each contest finalist had a wonderfully positive ocean message. We felt that the video, “Mr. Whale,” truly captured the essence of what constitutes an ocean hero and what the contest was about. Karim Sall offers a great potential for empowering others to take grassroots actions to make a difference in their communities. Thank you to Cheikh Seck and Khalil Ba for submitting their outstanding film.
Thank you to MY HERO for their efforts in coordinating this impactful contest and selecting the finalists, all of whom were very deserving and truly spoke of the necessity and importance of ocean heroes.
